High Light, Peak Light and Lake Light books by Dave Butcher

Photo Links

The links here are mostly those that Dave Butcher has found useful in the past. They are also biased towards the equipment that he uses, the places travelled to and other information sources, some that relate to his background and others that have not always been easy to find. We hope you find them useful. Please let us know if any of them are no longer working.

Materials & Equipment

  • Ilford Photo - the best black and white film, paper and chemistry in the world!

  • Ilford Lab Direct - processing film, making prints from negatives and digital files, all prints on Ilford RC silver-gelatine paper. Excellent quality. They process a lot of my films and make prints up to 48 inches square for me, larger than I can print.

  • Ilford Chronology - lists dates of product introductions and major Ilford events

  • Ilford Multigrade History

  • Harman Photo - Inkjet materials, from the same company that owns Ilford Photo, sharing the same factory

  • Harman Technology Ltd - parent company of Ilford Photo and Harman Photo

Photographic

  • DarkroomDave.com - my website for all things technical. Hints and tips in videos and articles. I have moved and added to the information that used to be on the Technical Notes pages here and created a lot of new advice sheets.

  •  Dave Butcher Blog - this is on Google as well as my web site and is where I put most of my news. I add to it every day or so. Available as RSS feed too.

  • Twitter @monodave

  • Steve Gledhill - Landscapes and much more, all black and white (worked with Steve at Ilford)

  • Phil Pankov - Fine Art Photography of Dublin and Ireland by award-winning Russian Irish photographer

  • The Hand Made Photograph - an e-zine set up and run by Wendy Erickson on traditional photography and darkroom techniques to which I contribute.

  • Photography Homepages - Lots of quality websites with good photography

Events and Groups

  • Artist & Designer's Fairs - Buxton Pavilion Gardens

  • Craft in Focus - Art and designer craft shows in the south east of England

  • High Peak Artists - Permanent gallery for a co-operative of around 40 local artists and craft workers of which I am a member in Buxton Pavilion Gardens, called Gallery in the Gardens. Open every day except Christmas day, free entry. A permanent display of Dave Butcher photographs. You can also meet Dave here roughly 2 days a month (see events calendar for dates). We have a second gallery in the same building called the Art Cafe where we hold regular group and solo exhibitions, such as my solo exhibition City Light in 2014.

  • International Craft and Hobby Fairs - We are doing Christmas fairs at the SECC in Glasgow in October and at the NEC in Birmingham in November.

  • Living Crafts - Hatfield House in May

Maps & Guidebooks

  • Satmap - gps system using actual topographic maps

  • Cicerone Press - pocket-sized, well written guide books

Course Accommodation, Travel, Holidays

  • Trekking in the Alps - Hilary Sharp, Alpine leader based in Vallorcine in the Chamonix valley; snowshoe and trekking trips in the Alps. Using a guide like Hilary (married to Jon de Montjoye) lets me spend time taking photographs instead of worrying about route finding, booking huts, local transport, etc. Highly recommended.

  • Jon de Montjoye - One of the best alpine mountain guides, based in Vallorcine in the Chamonix valley. Jon was my guide for most of my ski mountaineering trips and is very tolerant of photographers and their needs! Highly recommended.
